Research & Projects

These are all of the research projects I’ve worked on.

August 2018-May 2022

Master’s Thesis Research- Toward the Understanding of the 2018 Arnold, NE Earthquake Cluster: Relocation of Hypocenters and Establishment of New Gravity Base Stations

Advisor: Dr. Irina Filina; Committee Members: Dr. Caroline Burberry and Dr. Mindi Searls

Link to thesis: https://digitalcommons.unl.edu/geoscidiss/143/

Very Short Summary: There was an unexpected spate of 27 earthquakes in and around Arnold, NE in 2018. My thesis had three components: [1] Relocating the USGS hypocenters of these earthquakes; [2] Establishing new, publicly-accessable absolute gravity base stations on the UNL City Campus, and [3] Investigating possible causes of the Arnold earthquakes

Research was Graciously Funded by: The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (Teaching Assistantship), the Geological Society of America (Graduate Student Research Grant), the Nebraska Geological Society (Yatkola-Edwards Grant), and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (matched Yatkola-Edwards Grant).

Nebraska Earthquakes and Faults Research

With the help of Dr. Irina Filina, Dr. Mindi Searls, and Dr. Caroline Burberry, I investigated earthquakes and faults in Nebraska using a joint analysis of magnetics, gravity, and earthquake data. I also compiled an earthquake database that contains records from 1867 to August 2018 for Nebraska and parts of surrounding states using multiple sources.

This research was presented at several conferences and was published. Please see October 2017, April 2018, and December 2018 on the Publications page for more information.

Department Rock Sample Curation

A fulgurite, one of the samples that I organized

Under the supervision of Dr. Lynne Elkins, I examined and organized more than 2,000 hand samples of rocks as part of a relocation of the department’s collection, and I compiled the samples into a coherent database for department reference.

Football Seismology Project

The seismometer in Memorial Stadium (University of Nebraska-Lincoln)

I worked with Dr. Irina Filina and eight other undergraduate students  to collect and analyze data from a seismometer to see how much Huskers fans shake the stadium during football games.

This project was ongoing before the pandemic put it on hiatus.  Data was collected each fall by Dr. Filina and volunteers from her Introduction to Geophysics class.
